Day 8: Thu 28 Sep - Brisbane

Cool start to the day, ending with thunderstorms and heavy rain

Whilst the rest of MEPS visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Ann and I went to the ADF Military pharmacy special interest group meeting at Enoggera. It was an interesting day, jam-packed with 10 presentations, mornos, lunch, and afternoon tea.

There were two stand-out presentations for me: Evolving scope of pharmacy practice by Lisa Nissen, and Emergency pharmacy by a team from the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. The first presentation was all about how pharmacists can and have increased their scope of practice to include administering vaccines to prescribing. Despite doctors warning that people will die in the aisles of the pharmacy and in the streets if pharmacists were allowed to vaccinate, that never happened. With the newly introduced prescribing rights of pharmacists, the doctors are screaming 'murder' again. The second presentation was similar to the Surgical pharmacy given by the Chinese organisation; the RBWH has introduced pharmacists into the ED to decrease inappropriate drug use, and increase favourable patient outcomes. Although hospitals have many pharmacist, these ED and surgical pharmacists are specialising in the necessary and appropriate medicines. Makes perfect sense really.

The event only finished at 5pm, after which we made our way back to the apartments and organised to meet for dinner at 6pm. Had dinner at Hotel West End with Jane, Ann, Sylvain, Ulf, and Nita. We all had a good chat over good drinks and food. Everyone was feeling a little jaded, so it was another early night.
